The Amazing Maz!

Growing up in Pittsburgh in the 1950’s and living in Pittsburgh, I loved watching the Pirates at Forbes Field and listening to the Pirates on the radio. There were only two reasons I bought my first transistor radio with my paperboy money … to listen to Porky Chedwick spinning the sounds and Bob Prince announcing the Pirates baseball games. My love for the Pirates increased one hundred-fold when Bill Mazeroski hit the famous homerun heard round the world to beat the Yankees in game seven to win the1960 World Series! Yes, I listened to it on my transistor Radio! Ever since Maz became our second baseman he was my favorite Pirate running a close race with Roberto Clemente. I wanted to play second base so bad because of his vacuum cleaner double plays, and as Bob Prince would say the “Hoover!” Unfortunately, I became a Catcher and Pitcher but still was amazed by Bill Mazeroski. As a Little Leager I attended a workshop at the new mall and met Bill Mazeroski and Smokey Burgess. They were raffling off two baseball gloves, one signed by Bill and the Other by Smokey. They called the first ticket for the catchers mit which I wanted since I was a catcher … didn’t win. They called the second ticket for the Maz glove. that I REALLY wanted …I WON! I was now the proud owner of my very own Bill Mazeroski glove, AUTOGRAPHED! I thought for sure that I would become the second baseman of the Little League Giants … unfortunately I remained a catcher and pitcher. Later in life I became friends with the Amazing Maz, he would come into by restaurant at PNC Park and I played several rounds of golf with him for his charity events. I would imagine that Maz was tired of my little league story and his famous glove. You probably wondered what I did with the glove… here it goes. A few years after Little League and on my way to college I went home and asked my Dad where my glove was … he said …”since you are no longer playing baseball, I gave it to a friend for his kid who was playing Little League … second base”. As you could imagine … I was devastated! I still have my original autograph that was in my autograph book … it’s tapped together and yellow from aging but it’s from my favorite Pirate … the Amazing Maz!
