Motown … message heard ’round the world!

“Sound of Young America!” … the battle cry of the 1960’s … the Motown Sound! Growing up as teen in the 1960’s I experienced a lot of change. I watched Rhythm n’ Blues (the so-called Devil’s Music”) grow into Soul Music, a Man on the Moon, an atomic threat to end all of mankind, a fight for equality with the Civil Rights Movement, a war in a faraway land that nobody wanted, a major boost to technology and a transition into becoming an adult. What I remember the most about that decade was my love for this new sound sweeping the Nation and World … the “Motown Sound”. A new music that was created to attract all youth, no color barrier, no gender barrier, ethnic barrier … just a sound that captured the attention of the youth. This new sound took over my Soul … Ooooh Baby … the feeling you get when the music becomes part of you! I became part of a movement that is as fresh today as it was when I first heard it! Thank you, Mr. Berry Gordy Jr., creator of the Motown Sound. It started as a small record label called … “TAMLA Records” … with offsprings called Gordy Records, Motown Records, Soul Records, V.I.P. Records … becoming the Mighty Motown Machine! It swallowed up a lot of the smaller Detroit record labels like Anna, Mel-o-dy, Check-Mate, Miracle and became a soul music phenomenon. It all began in 1959 as Tamla Records and incorporated as the Motown Record Corporation in 1960. It’s family of entertainers became household names, The Miracles, the Temptations, Four Tops, Mary Wells, the Marvelettes, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, just to name a few. Their music was the soundtrack of our generation. Their sounds were similar yet different mostly backed by a bunch of men and women who were the unsung heroes of the Sound … the Funk Brothers and the Andantes. The sound has survived many new challengers for over 66 years but never grows old … you can hear it to this very day on radio stations, in movies, in TV programs and even young kids singing it’s praises today. For those who may not be familiar with the Motown Sound, tune into my Internet Radio Show, Johnny Angels Heavenly Soul Show, on jukinoldies.com this Sunday night at 8:00 PM (EST) as I spotlight the “Sound of Young America” … the “Motown Sound”! Just talking about this magical music takes me back to my youth and my introduction to the Mighty Motown Machine! Tune in and “Git Yerself” S-O-U-L-I-F-E-D!
