Saying goodbye to an old friend is always difficult … made easier when reminiscing about all those great times experienced together. Lou Christie was born Lugee Alfredo Giovanni Sacco in Glenwillard, PA just a short distance from Pittsburgh … known for his falsetto voice. Lou came on the music scene professionally in 1962 and was still headlining shows until we lost him to Rock and Roll Heaven on June 18, 2025. Remembered for his Pop/Rock hits like “The Gypsy Cried”, “Lightning Strikes”, “Rapsody in the Rain”, “Two Faces Have I”, “I’m Gonna Make You Mine” and so many more over a sixty plus year career. I have so many fond memories of working with Lou starting with a show I/we put together in 2016 at the world-famous Heinz Hall, a show that welcomed Lou back to the “Burgh”. The show was part of our Rock’n Roldies Showcase series with Lou Christie, the Impressions, Dee Dee Sharp, Eugene Pitt and the Jive Five and yours truly Johnny Angel and the Halos. As we were going through sound check many memories of singing with Lou rushed through my brain like the 3WS Oldies concerts, the Party at the Point, the Three Rivers Regatta shows, Montemurro’s Supper Club, Starlake Amphitheater and the list goes on. I especially remembered the 3WS Christmas shows live from Station Square and that triggered the Christmas Eve live broadcasts memories of conducting the Pittsburgh DooWop Choir that featured Lou Christie singing “O Holy Night” with a choir made up of singers from so many great Pittsburgh groups. One of my favorite memories of working with Lou was recording a song written by Greg Scharf (Sweet Breeze) and produced by Joe Munroe and Greg Sharf called “The Soldier”. The song was released to raise money for the “Hope for the Warriors” project … Pittsburgh Rock Legends who support those who protect our Freedom. The song featured Lou Christie, Jimmy Beaumont (Skyliners), Donnie Iris, Joe Grushecky, Jimmie Ross (Jaggerz), Pete Hewlett, Johnny Angel (Halos) and special introduction by Pittsburgh Pirate skipper, Clint Hurdle. Another one of my favorite Lou Christie memories was surprising Lou on stage singing Happy Birthday to Him at Montemurro’s presenting him with a special birthday cake … the show turned into a special party! Now that I think of it, every event that involved Lou Christie was a special party! Lou Christie … memories of a Pittsburgh Music Icon! You will be missed Lou…
