La-La means I Love You … it’s a song, it’s a poem, a way of life, but for me … it’s a Love Story! What is the meaning of La-La? Well, La-La symbolizes the ineffability of love, a feeling so deep that it cannot be fully expressed in words. What is ineffable … it means too great or extreme to be expressed or described in words. It’s about finding joy despite challenges. It’s Singing without words, expressing happiness or a carefree attitude, Basically … La-La is something unusually good. In a nutshell … La-La means … I Love You! The first time I heard this record … it spoke to me … especially the second verse …
“If I ever saw a girl that I needed in this world, you are the one for me … Let me hold you in my arms and thrill you with my charms, I’m sure you will see … the things I am saying are true, and the way I explain them to you … Listen to me, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la means I LOVE YOU!” The soul group who sang this beautiful ballad were the Delfonics … the lead singer later became a friend of mine … his name was William “Poogie” Hart and his birthday is coming up this Saturday, January 17th. This song became my favorite song the first time I heard it … it reminded me of the beautiful woman who would someday be my wife and lifelong partner … I was in High School at the time … going to dances like West View Danceland, Teen Scene, the Bellevue YMCA and others. I remember the first time I got up the courage to ask her to dance … It was to the song … “La-La means I Love you!” Well, we dated through the next few years and eventually we got married. I was singing and performing quite a bit at the time, and she was by my side through every twist and turn. For our 25th wedding anniversary I invited the Delfonics into the ‘Burgh to perform at the Emerald Room Theater with us. I told them how important their song was to me and that it was our Wedding Song. That evening during the Delfonics show … they called Marylou and I up on stage … dedicated the song to us and we danced to our song … on stage … sung live by the guys who originally recorded it! It was a dream come true … our song … on stage with the girl I love in my arms. Through the years, every time I hear this beautiful song … it ignites that feeling I/we had that night! “La-La … I Love you BABY!
