Just some of the Guys sitting around singing DooWop!

What do DooWopers do after a show at the theater? Well, we sit at a round table and sing some a cappella DooWop tunes! Hard to believe? It’s true! Well last week I wrote a blog about my old friend Eugene Pitt of the Jive Five celebrating his birthday and kind of got lost in the binders full of photos from singing over my 55+ year career. One photo that got me reminiscing was a show I/we did with the Royal All Stars at the Emerald Room Theater. Seven veterans, DooWopers sitting around talking about the music, the old songs, the many memories of performing and after singing for more than two and a half hours … we break into song each taking a lead but we all just wanted to sing harmony, that’s the true love of DooWop, street corner harmony, and a cappella. Human voices blending together making chords and rhythms … who wants to sing lead? The photo above is one of my favorite photos … standing left to right is yours truly, Johnny Angel, Gary “Bubba” Daley both of Johnny Angel and the Halos and Randy Silver of the Impalas. Sitting left to right is Art Loria of the Earls, Jimmy Merchant of the Teenagers, Vito Balsomo of the Salutations and Eugene Pitt of the Jive Five. After a few cocktails to relax and chill out … we break into song. Not long after that photo we ventured up to Long Island to the Tres Theater to do it again. I miss those days and especially some of our friends who are no longer with us who are now singing in Rock n’ Roll Heaven … I’m sure it is beautiful … I wonder if they have a hallway or stoop to sing on… or maybe a cool cloud to hand out. I’m not singing as much anymore but I do find myself reminiscing of the many artists, musicians and entertainers that I have worked with. If you are in the neighborhood on the Northside … stop by my Johnny Angel Ginchy Stuff and Museum … I have so many stories that I’d love to share with you … and who knows maybe a few DooWopers will pop in! Again, that photo above has a name … Just Some Of The Guys Sitting Around Singing DooWop!
