Johnny Angel and the Philly Connection!

Over my many years as an entertainer, musician, singer and promoter, I have made a lot of friends … especially my Philly friends. I sang with, worked with and backed many of the acts that came from Philly. Not only that, but many have also spent time with me at my restaurant, Atria’s at PNC Park and/or the Emerald Room (which is now known as the Roxian). Yesterday I talked with my old friend Ceasar Berry of the original Tymes and we reminisced about the many times we have worked together, broke bread together and shared moments with our family members together. We talked about getting together to do one more show before we retire. A few years ago, we, Ceasar of the Tymes, Dee Dee Sharp and yours truly (Johnny Angel and the Halos) were putting together a show called … the Sharp/Tymes Revue. We premiered it at the Emerald Room and had hopes of taking it on the road. The show opened up with all three of us on stage doing a medley of “My Girl and My Guy” after that we, Johhny Angel and the Halos, stayed on stage and performed a few songs with the Tymes joining us doing all their hits … a brief intermission and then we came back on with Dee Dee joining us doing her many hits. The show ended with a finale of all three acts ending as we began. Unfortunately, life sort of got in the way and the proposed tour ended as a dream. The plan was to introduce the concept and at the end of the tour, a concert in Pittsburgh and Philly with groups from the ‘Burgh meeting and performing with groups from Philly. This made a lot of sense since many groups from Philly worked with us, Johnny Angel and the Halos, like Len Barry (Dovells), Eddie Holman and Chubby Checker. We also had our Pittsburgh friends at the Emerald Room the likes of, Jimmy Beaumont and the Skyliners, the Marcels and the Jaggerz. Our friendship’s continued but our dream of a Philly Meets da ‘Burgh show never took place. By the way, this coming Tuesday is Dee Dee Sharps Birthday, and I will be doing a special radio show this Sunday Night at 8:00PM (EST) spotlighting Dee Dee and an interview I did with her years ago. I’ll be spinning tunes from many of our Philly friends and East meets West with some of our ‘Burgh friends. You can listen in by downloading the app, jukinoldies.com, our internet radio station featuring 32 jocks, which I am one of. Maybe our idea of da ‘ Burgh meets Philly will virtually happen this Sunday evening. I hope you can join me with stories and memories of days gone by when Phill meets Pittsburgh!
