I Wanted To Be A Drummer … My Mother Wanted An Accordion Player!

From the first time I heard music I wanted to be a drummer. However, my Mom wanted me to be an accordion player. In the late fifties and early sixties, there wasn’t much call for an accordion player in Soul, Rhythm n’ Blues and Rock n’ Roll music even know I appreciated ethnic music … I didn’t want to play in a polka band. So how did it start… well my mom thought it would be good for me to take accordion lessons. Back in the day, accordion teachers like doctors used to come to your house. My parents rented an accordion and made arrangements for the teacher to come to my house on Smithton Street. I was in panic mode … that week I saw the teacher walking up my steps … brainstorm! I immediately ran to the bathroom and stuck my fingers down my throat to make myself gag … and vomit! My parents thought I was sick and cancelled the lesson … even though they still had to pay for the lesson. A week goes by and here comes the accordion teacher up the steps again … it worked once … back to the bathroom. However, this week, I got caught! Needless to say, my father was not happy with me … I started playing my rented accordion. Moving forward, right about this time I started High School … David B. Oliver on the Northside … there was not any middle school in the old days and right to High School in the seventh grade … in the mix with all the big kids. I took up band and started playing trumpet since my parents would not have a drummer in their house. In band, I hung with the drummers and gradually started practicing with the drum section. The drums came to me automatically and with my paper money, I bought a pair of drum sticks and made a drum pad to practice on … my parents never knew since I still had my trumpet from school. Well, I thought I got away with it until my parents went to the first parent teachers meeting … they received my schedule and proceeded to talk with my teachers. It didn’t take long for them to visit the band room. They introduced themselves to my band teacher and he said sit in the drum section. My mother immediately corrected him by saying … “you must have him confused with someone else … our son is a trumpet player!” His response was … “Oh I know who he is and he is not a trumpet player … but even though I’m not a fan of drums … he is quite the drummer!” … Dang! again I got caught … and my father instilled some much-needed discipline! Well, I did continue with my plan to be a drummer however, I do have a respect for all the accordion players of the world. Speaking of which … this Sunday, October 12th from 11:00AM until 1:00PM, I/we will have entertainment at our new breakfast restaurant … Jenny Lee Breakfast Nook, guess what band will be playing to bring joy and happiness to the beautiful people having breakfast? “Accordions Likely” is the name of the band! They have two accordion players, a Tuba, a trumpet and a banjo! They play everything from Polka’s to Punk … they are incredible! Mission accomplished … the only thing missing is a drummer! My parents would be so proud of me!
