Porky Chedwick … Pittsburgh Legend … Friend

This past Monday, March 2, 2026 was the day the music died in Pittsburgh. That was the day we lost our Dadio of Radio … Porky Chedwick. The man who turned us, so called juvenile delinquents, onto the greatest music ever recorded … Rhythm and Blues. He was described as the “Platter Pushin’ Papa”, “Pork the Tork”, “The Blond Wonder with the Music Thunder” and of course the “Dadio of the Radio” … our music Guru. I was turned onto the Bossman when I was just a young street kid delivering papers to save up money to buy a transistor radio to listen to this new (OLD) music that was labeled the devils music by most adults. He soon became our teacher, our expert on cool sounds, our leader of musical preference … he was THE MAN! As years went by and I developed into a musician/singer and was blessed to not only meet this man but become a friend. He was my mentor when becoming a radio DJ and music lover. Porky began following our band and soon became one of our most valued critics giving us advice on the music we played and loved. Pictured above is the record we wrote and recorded for Porky’s 50-year anniversary as a DJ in the radio business. Porky actually lays down the “porkisims” on the record. Over the years Porky was part of our music entourage traveling to concerts and gigs. For many years we did a special Porky Day at my restaurant at PNC Park (Atria’s) … setting up turntables with different jocks taking turns playing Porky Sounds. One of my favorite ventures was taking Porky to Cleveland to receive an award into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum “Dedicated To the One I Love” display. That day he was honored as one of the pioneers introducing us kids to Rock and Roll, Rhythm and Blues. Now that is Porky the DJ … I was fortune enough to know Porky the Man. Let me give a few words about his heart … he was honest, sincere, loving and kind. Not only did Porky introduce many records that could not get airtime due to social injustices but was admired by many artists who were thankful for his kind heart and amazing ear for talent. If you every have a chance to stop down my Johnny Angels Ginchy Stuff and Museum … I have a huge exhibit dedicated to our music hero … Porky Chedwick. I am open weekends from 11:00 AM until 5:00 PM … 1800 Preble Avenue, Pgh., PA 15233. I miss my Porky but treasure the great memories he helped create. Porky Chedwick is a Pittsburgh Legend and Icon … but most important … my FRIEND!
