That day I met and sang with Chuck Negron of Three Dog Night!

This past Monday, February 2, 2026 , we lost another legend to Rock N’ Roll Heaven … Mr. Chuck Negron, lead singer of Three Dog Night. I have loved this group since the first time I heard them and were basically the soundtrack of the late 60’s thru the early 70’s. I/my bands covered many of their hits so you can imagine how excited I was to meet the man who sang lead on so many Three Dog Night Songs: “One”, “Easy To Be Hard”, “Joy To The World”, “An Old Fashion Love Song”, Pieces of April” and “The Show Must Go On” not to mention the classics he sang on from their early success. I was in volved with the Vocal Group Hall Of Fame and Museum in Sharon, Pa and met Chuck at the ceremony when he/they were inducted. My band, Johnny Angel and the Halos were backing most of the acts that were performing that night for the Induction Concert. We were rehearsing many of the legendary singers in the rehearsal hall names like … “Bill Pinkney of the Drifters, Harvey Fuqua of the Moonglows, Carl Gardner of the Coasters, Ms. Mary Wilson of the Supremes and Jimmy Merchant of the Teenagers. I noticed that Chuck Negron was watching rehearsal and was getting ready to rehearse with members of our band. He said, “I saw you were singing backup for most of the performers … do you know our songs?” Not only did we know them, but we have covered so many of his songs. We jumped at the opportunity … the photos above were from the rehearsal session. Chuck liked what he heard and asked if we would join him onstage singing most of his hits. What an experience, singing behind a Rock Icon. That lead to another show we did with Chuck Negron for the Fallen Marine Benefit Show. Over the years we talked and as always, I was like a sponge especially when he told me his first group in New York was a DooWop Group called the Rondells and they released a record called “Bells of Your Heart” which I have played many times since on my Radio Shows (Johnny Angel’s Heavenly Soul Show on jukinoldies.com). The most impressing thing about Chuck was not the fact that he had an incredible voice and had many gold records but the fact that he overcame a series of addiction problems and never gave up. If you ever have the opportunity to read his book … “Three Dog Nightmare” it is a great book about a great Rock Legend. I’ll never forget that day I met and sang with Chuck Negron … Rest In Peace Chuck!
