As I grow older, I reminisce more than ever … re-living those memorable days of our Family at 3WS Radio! That may sound rather weird, but we were a family of music and memories. The station provided music of our youth, musicians from all genres of music, family events, but especially a love for Christmas. Let’s flash back to some of the public events… the Summer Oldies Concerts at 3 Rivers Stadium and Star Lake Amphitheater, the three Rivers Regatta at the Point, the Morning Zoo, the fabulous jocks that made appearances at nearly all the community and City events, the 3WS softball games, the 3WS drumline, the 3WS car cruises, the Sunday Night Oldies show with R.D. Summers and of course his game shows with the Tuki Bird, the introductions and professionalism of the great Mike Frazer, the live station guests like the Steelers, Pirates, Penguins, Porky Chedwick, The Beaver (Jerry Mathers) and especially the Christmas Holiday events. Tis’ the season so let’s zero in on Christmas. The live Christmas shows at Station Square with special guests, Johnny Angel and the Halos, Lou Christie, Christine Aguilera, Donnie Iris, Pete Hewlett, B.E. Taylor, Jeff Jimmerson, Jimmy Beaumont … just to name a few. Do you remember the Home for the Holidays CD’s to help feed the homeless? How about the first Christmas Mass pictured above featuring left to right, Dave “Pinky” Martin, Johnny Angel, Gary “Bubba” Daley, B.E. Taylor, Jeff Jimmerson and Hermie Granati? Speaking of the Christmas Masses … enter the Pittsburgh DooWop Choir with Father Scott Sethaller … featuring members of so many Pittsburgh Groups like the Skyliners, Four Dots, Johnny Angel and the Halos, Memories, Sinceres, William Dell and Wee Jams, Magic Moments and Lou Christie … just to name a few (apologies knowing I missed a few due to age). I believe 3WS was one of the first radio stations to run nonstop Christmas and Holiday music through Christmas Day. Even though lot of these things are now just memories … memories of our youth but, these moments are treasures of our past. I hope some of these memories brought back some moments of good times, family and friendships. Merry Christmas to all … and God Bless!
