So many memories, so many musical family friendships … one special friend and musical memory was spending time and singing with Eugene Pitt. Today is Eugene’s birthday, November 6th. As I sit here going through some old photos, I began watching an old video from my Emerald Room Theater days, Eugene Pitt on stage with yours truly, Johnny Angel and the Halos. The event was our CD release party at the Emerald Room Theater. So many old friends were there … Fred “Blue Moon” Johnson original Bassman of the Marcels, Jimmy Beaumont, Don and Juan, Kenny Mitchell and Eugene Pitt just to name a few. At one point in the show many artists joined us on stage, but one particular memory came to mind. Eugene Pitt of the Jive Five came up to sing with us and then we asked him to sing “My True Story”, one of my favorite Jive Five recordings. Not only did Eugene sing the song but he did the entire performance talking about the song and his ending of the song chanting “Cry, Cry, Cry” … my goose bumps had goose bumps! That was only one special memory with Mr. Pitt but there are so many others like Geno breaking bread with me at my restaurant, Atria’s at PNC Park, and making comments of how great my ribs were and singing a cappella at the restaurant. I remember performances with Eugene when he was a member of the “Royal All Stars Show” and one special evening at the Tres Theater in Long Island. At each performance Eugene would sing “My True Story” and bring the house down. Sitting and talking about the good old days with Eugene was like reading a history book of DooWop, Soul and Rhythm n’ Blues. I have a wonderful tribute to Eugene Pitt at my Johnny Angel Ginchy Stuff and Museum where his red tux and suitcase is displayed. This coming Sunday Night I will be doing a special spotlight show honoring the sounds of Eugene Pitt. I will be playing an interview I did with Eugene a few years ago … you can listen in by downloading the jukinoldies app … jukinoldies.com. The show is live Sunday at 8:00 PM (EST). Happy Heavenly Birthday to my old friend … Eugene Pitt!
