Pittsburgh’s Golden Age of Rock ‘n’ Roll … Ed Salamon!

I came across a photo of an old friend, Ed Salamon, who stopped by Johnny Angels Ginchy Stuff and Museum a while ago. I then pulled out a copy of the book he had written called “Pittsburgh’s Golden Age of Rock ‘n’ Roll”. I immediately went into reminiscing mode. I remember when the book first came out and Ed had several of the Pittsburgh musicians who appear in the book do a press conference type book signing. The panel Ed selected was old friends who came up in the business and made an impact on Pittsburgh Music history. Jimmy Beaumont (Skyliners), Frankie Czuri (Igniters/Jaggerz), Joe Greshecky (Iron City Houserockers) and yours truly Jack Hunt (Johnny Angel and the Halos) … all who appear several times in the book. Just reading some of the comments and quotes on the back cover is exciting with hundreds of rare photos, many who became internationally famous like the Skyliners, Del Vikings, Lou Christie, Bobby Vinton, the Marcels, the Vogues and the Jaggerz. … many others heard their music played on local radio stations next to songs by Elvis, the Beatles, and Elton John or filled dancehalls and school gyms with their live performances. One particular quote from the book was Sean McDowell from WDVE radio: … “Ed Salamon’s Pittsburgh’s Golden Age of Rock ‘N’ Roll is so fascinating for Pittsburgh Music Lovers like me. And the pictures in Ed’s Book! See Rich Engler, Donnie Iris, Joe Greshecky, Johnny Angel, Pete Hewlett and Frank Czuri all as young pups. At the book signing, Ed gave an overview of the book and opened it up to the audience to ask question about growing up in the Pittsburgh Music scene. For those who are not familiar with Ed … here are some tid bits… he is an award-winning broadcaster for more than forty years … a fifteen-year partnership with Dick Clark … he has interviewed many Rock ‘n Roll giants like Little Richard, Bo Diddley members of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, just to name a few … as well as two previously published books on music and media! If this blog ignites your interest in Pittsburgh Music, stop by my Johnny Angels Ginchy Stuff and Museum to see so many Pittsburgh music treasures as well as many National acts and their connection to Pittsburgh music. The memories are what keeps me going … Pittsburgh’s Golden Age of Rock ‘n’ Roll … thanks Mr. Ed Salamon!
