The Steals Brothers … Could It Be I’m Falling In Love!

Melvin and Mervin Steals, twins from Aliquippa, PA just a few minutes out of Greater Pittsburgh. They attended Cheyney State College in Philadelphia, PA where they started their first singing group, the Four Perfections, met Eddie Holman (of “Hey, There Lonely Girl” fame) who introduced them to the Philadelphia Music Scene, and began their song writing team as Mystro and Lyric. As the Four Perfections they released their first record for the Party Time Record Label and had some local success, but the record is now a rare Northern Soul collectors’ gem. Their true music fame came when they started writing some soon to be classic Soul Sounds for the likes of Archie Bell and the Drells, the Impressions, Brenda and the Tabulations, the Trammps, the Jaggerz, Gloria Gaynor, to name a few, and their biggest hit by the Spinners … “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love”! This week, December 30, 1972, the song was released on the Atlantic Record Label. Melvin Steals is one of my treasured friends who has performed with us, Johnny Angel and the Halos, and he still stops by my Johnny Angels Ginchy Stuff and Museum weekly. Sundays are special visits from Melvin and I love hearing his stories about his music career, especially when he tells visitors how his inspiration for the song (Could It Be I’m Falling In Love) was his bride Adrena. One of the favorite high lights from my music career was being part of the Awards Gala and Concert at the August Wilson Center for the anniversary of the Soul Classic. Melvin and Mervin along with original members of the Four Perfections, Barry Lessene and Chip Porter were back in the music spotlight again, sharing the stage with Johnny Angel and the Halos, Earl Young of the Trammps, the Urban Impact Singers and headlining the show was our old friend Mr. Eddie Holman. Last year, 52 years after the release of “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love” the song was re-recorded by Russell Thompson Jr. original lead singer of the Stylistics. Melvin and Mervin are National Treasures!
