The Birth of Johnny Angel’s Soul Patrol

As many of you know, I have been involved with radio for over 35 years an consider it one of my many passions. Over the past 10+ years I have been part of the Internet Radio Phenom … and currently part of the Jukinoldies family of jocks on Jukinoldies.com (just download the ap and relive the golden days of radio). When you tune into my show I refer to my listening audience as my Soul Patrol, which was bestowed upon me during my Nostalgia Radio days on WZUM with my old friend and Pittsburgh DJ Icon, Mad Mike Metro. Mike and fellow jock Rookie Rick answered the phone at times to take requests … as they handed me the note with the request, Mike would say it’s another request from your Soul Patrol! Let’s reminisce, the WZUM radio shows were based out of Pietro’s Pizza in Da ‘Burgh were Mad Mike built a nostalgic radio station in the window of the Pizza Shop … it was a true throwback to the great days of radio with its dual turn tables, cart machines, sliders and knobs on the antiquated board. We played nuttin’ but vinyl …blasts from the past. My show was called the Johnny Angel Heavenly Soul Show which exists to this very day on Jukinoldies.com, every Sunday Night at 8:00 PM (EST). Did I tell you that our request line was a wall mounted, payphone on the wall of the pizza shop. Listeners and pranksters would show up at the window to dance, try to crack me up while on live radio and just take part in the show each week. We had our family of oldies loving, cast of characters like, Laid Back Lenny, Rookie Rick, Bill Dell, and Mad Mike Metro to name a few … all there to preserve the old sounds and carry on the tradition of Pittsburgh Oldies! A typical day at the station had cars passing by blasting the station and honking their horns as they drove past, some bought their pizza and ate it outside in their cars as they listened to the sounds … it was like a continuous classic car show with a continuous classic cast of characters. One particular day the bread truck pulled up to deliver and out of the back popped Laid Back Lenny in a trench coat and mask right in front of the window during my show … yes, I cracked up live on the air. Just recently I received a call from an old friend who now lives in Richmond, VA … he said that he still has his “Soul Patrol” card … and carries it to this very day. My Soul Patrol are loyal to the sounds, and I just recently added another new Soul Patrol Member to the team as the troop continues to grow. Well, that’s the Birth of Johnny Angel’s Soul Patrol … what are you waiting for … it’s never too late to join the “Soul Patrol”!
