Memories of Jimmy Beaumont … DooWop and Golf!

This day in 1959, Jimmy Beaumont and the Skyliners performed their first record on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand … “Since I Don’t Have You”. A song written on an envelope by Joe Rock, Skyliners Manager, on their way to rehearsal. When I read this today, I began reminiscing about my old friend. My mind went back to days golfing with Jimmy or singing at my restaurant, Atria’s at PNC Park or the shows/concerts we did together. For being such a headlining singer on stage … he was rather quiet and laid back off stage, with a great sense of humor. I recall a weekend at Conneaut Lake Park we, Johnny Angel and the Halos, the Skyliners and the Marcels were performing for a DooWop bash. Most of the groups went up early to golf, relax and sound check for the festivities. That first evening we were all meeting at a bar/restaurant. When I got there the manager asked me who all was coming and asked me if I thought Jimmy Beaumont was stopping by. As I looked around the room, I noticed a familiar face at the end of the bar. I said to the manager … look down the bar … Jimmy was already there. The manager was star struck but Jimmy was just one of the guys fitting in with the locals … no ego … no special treatment … just Jimmy B! As I approached Jimmy he looked up with that big smile and said …”Jackson, what took you so long”. Even though Jimmy Beaumont was one of the greatest lead singers of our era, he loved singing harmony … he loved DooWop. If we were gathering around singing street corner, Jimmy would grab the bass part and just blend in rarely singing the lead part … but he was a stickler for harmony as you can hear on his records. If you ever have the chance to stop by my Johnny Angels Ginchy Stuff and Museum at the R.J. Casey Industrial Park in Pittsburgh, check out the Skyliners exhibits. I love reminiscing about the good old days and especially about the great Jimmy Beaumont. Memories of Jimmy Beaumont … Golf and DooWop … I miss him but the memories live on!
