Today, March 6th is the Birthday of an old friend and one of my favorite singers… Ms. Mary Wilson. We lost Mary four years ago … today I started reminiscing about her music and some good times. Although I have many memories of my friend there two in particular that come to mind. I have a display dedicated to Mary in my Museum, Johnny Angels Ginchy Stuff and Museum, and every day that I walk by it I reminisce about performing with Mary and working with her at the Vocal Group Hall Of Fame. One day a few years ago, I was standing in front of her exhibit talking with some young musicians. One of the young men said “Johnny what was it like singing with Mary” … just as I began to tell them, I received a ding on my phone, it was Mary Wilson wishing me a Happy Fathers Day. I said to the young men … “check this out it’s from Mary” … needless to say they were blown away. We then started a text conversation and Mary began reminiscing about a show we did at the Vocal Group Hall Of Fame and how she was late for sound check due to her and my wife, Marylou, shopping for shoes. The picture above was from that show. My second memory that comes to mind was being on stage, singing background for Mary. We were singing a medley of her many hits that included “Stop In The Name Of Love” … Bubba and I were doing the motions of the Supremes choreography … which put a smile on Mary’s face. At the end of the song…Mary said to the audience … “Give it up for my singers tonight, Johnny and Bubba from Johnny Angel and the Halos … these boys can chirp but they’re not the prettiest Supremes I’ve ever worked with” … a memory I will never forget. Mary Wilson was a beautiful lady inside and out and her polished stage presence was incredible. Wonderful memories of a SUPREME Lady … Mary Wilson!
