Harvey Fuqua … He was the whole package!

One of my favorite singers and music legends was the late great Harvey Fuqua, founder and lead singer of the legendary Moonglows. Where do I begin … I met Harvey when he was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and Museum. Early in the day I had time to sit and talk with Harvey and like the information sponge I’ve become I asked him about DooWop, the Moonglows, Alan Freed, Marvin Gaye, the Spinners, Tri-Phi Records and of course his association with the Mighty Motown Machine! Later that the day, I was at rehearsal for all the acts we were backing like Carl Gardner of the Coasters, Bill Pinkney and Charlie Thomas of the Drifters, Mary Wilson of the Supremes and Chuck Negron of Three Dog Night. I noticed Harvey sitting in the rehearsal room smiling. After our rehearsal he approached me and asked me if my partner Bubba and I knew his songs (Moonglows) … I jumped at the opportunity! He asked us to sing with him at the show … I mean what R&B/R&R singer wouldn’t know Moonglows songs! It was an honor to be asked but the thrill of a lifetime to actually sing with the great Harvey Fuqua! Who are not familiar with the great Harvey Fuqua … here are some key points: Alan Freed gave them their group name, the Moonglows after his nickname the Moondog, he recorded some of the greatest R&B songs in the history of music, he discovered Marvin Gaye when he was singing with the Marquees making him a member of the New Moonglows, he discovered and sang with the early Spinners for his record label, Tri-Phi and after all of that he joined the Mighty Motown Machine as a song writer and executive Producer. And did I mention that he was married to Berry Gordy’s sister, Gwen Gordy who owned Anna Records at the time? After singing with Harvey, we broke bread and had more conversation. He gave me his latest CD’s and I gave him one of our Johnny Angel and the Halos t-shirts which he quickly put on … see the above picture. I stayed in touch with Harvey until he passed in 2010. If you ever get a chance to listen to the LP … “The Return of the Moonglows” … it is a soulful, Rhythm n’ Blues masterpiece and one of my top ten all time albums. What more can I say … “Harvey Fuqua … He was the whole package!”
