Four Tops … It’s the Same Old Song

The Four Tops … “It’s The Same Old Song” … today back in 1965 Berry Gordy once again showed his business savvy when he rushed to get a new Four Tops single in the marketplace after the tremendous success of the soon to be Soul classic … “I Can’t Help Myself”. He had the Four Tops record the new follow up single, “Same Old Song”, on a Thursday and had the 45 RPM in the stores by the next Monday! The Mighty Motown Machine was in full throttle providing us “The Sound Of Young America”. Berry Gordy wasted no time putting that Motor City Soul Sound in the mainstream music scene for all America’s youth. I had the honors of meeting, performing with and becoming friends with Levi, Lawrence, Duke and Obie … the Four Tops. The group started singing together as the Four Aims in 1953 before changing their name to the Four Tops to avoid any confusion with the Ames Brothers. in 1956 they signed with the Chess Record Label laying down their unbelievable, tight close harmonies. In 1964 the Tops began singing backgrounds for the Supremes, Martha and the Vandellas and others in the Motown stable until hitting the charts with their soon to be Motown Classics. The Four Tops were not only incredible singers, showmen and dancers, they were just downright good people! On July 29th, 1987, Governor James Blanchard declared that day as the Four Tops Day for their contributions to music. Thank you, Gentlemen for the Music, the Memories and the friendship. Your music will live on … bringing joy to the masses … The Four Tops!
